THE MOB MUSEUM ANNOUNCES APRIL PROGRAMS
Roster of Events Includes First Anniversary Celebration for The Underground

LAS VEGAS (March 2019) – The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its roster of public programs for April. Among this month’s events, April 20 will mark the one-year anniversary of The Underground, the Museum’s Prohibition history exhibition housing an authentic 1920s-inspired speakeasy and moonshine distillery. A special celebration is planned for that evening. Also of note, the Museum will be hosting the keynote address for UNLV Boyd School of Law’s conference, “Doing Justice: Race, Reform and New Strategies.” The address will be livestreamed here.

Keynote Address, UNLV Boyd School of Law’s Conference, “Doing Justice: Race,
Reform and New Strategies”

• Date: Monday, April 1
• Time: 6 p.m.
• Location: Not open to the public; livestream available here.
• Speaker: Cynthia Lee, Charles Kennedy Poe Research Professor of Law, George Washington University, who will discuss her work on the topic of implicit bias.
• Description: With the addition of its Use of Force Training Experience, The Mob Museum has offered all visitors content related to the issues impacting police use of force, including implicit bias.

Organized Crime Today Video conference: The RFK Assassination: Separating
Fact from Fiction

• Date: Saturday, April 6
• Time: 2 – 3 p.m.
• Location: Organized Crime Today exhibit area.
• Speaker: Dan Moldea
• Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum Admission.
• Description: During this event, Author Dan Moldea will detail the facts of the Robert F. Kennedy assassination case and address the many theories that persist to this day. Like the assassination of his brother, the murder of Robert F. Kennedy has been complicated by myths and theories that question the conventional wisdom. One new claim even links the CIA and Las Vegas’ Robert Maheu, chief executive of Nevada operation for Howard Hughes, to the younger Kennedy brother’s death.

Battling the Black Hand: The Epic Story of a Postal Inspector Who Took on the
Mob

• Date: Thursday, April 11
• Time: 7 – 8 p.m. with book signing to follow
• Location: Historic courtroom on the second floor.
• Speaker: William Oldfield, great-grandson of Frank Oldfield, heroic postal inspector from Ohio, whose quest to bring down the criminal syndicate operating in the Midwest culminated in the 1909 capture of 16 Black Hand members.
• Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum admission.
• Description: Before the emergence of Prohibition-era kingpins such as Al Capone and Charles “Lucky” Luciano, there was the Black Hand: a Sicilian- American crime ring that preyed on immigrants from the old country. During this time, the FBI was in its infancy, and local law enforcement struggled to respond to the rampant extortion schemes perpetrated by this rising menace. An unlikely hero emerged in the form of Postal Inspector Frank Oldfield. William Oldfield, his great-grandson, and Author Victoria Bruce, will present their groundbreaking revelations about this little-known Mob story based on never-before-seen documents and photos from the Oldfield family’s private collection.

Science of Crime: Polygraph Examination

• Date: April 13
• Time: 2 – 3 p.m.
• Location: Organized Crime Today exhibition on the first floor.
• Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum Admission
• Description: Each month, the Museum’s Science of Crime presentations explore the disciplines and sciences that encompass forensic analysis. At the April program, Wynn Las Vegas Executive Vice President of Corporate Security James Stern, who served more than 25 years with the FBI in various senior roles, will discuss the science and application of the polygraph examination and
  how this instrument is used to gauge physiological responses in the human body and how it can indicate the truthfulness of a subject.

Tax Fraud Prevention with IRS-CI – Community Safety Forum Sponsored by NV
Energy

• Date: Sunday, April 14
• Time: 2 – 3 p.m.
• Location: Historic courtroom on the second floor.
• Cost: Free, including free Museum admission thanks to sponsorship provided by NV Energy. Free Admission to The Mob Museum following the event to guests attending Community Safety Forums sponsored by NV Energy. Also, thanks to NV Energy’s generous support, The Mob Museum will provide live streaming of the presentations online.
• Description: An investigator with the IRS Criminal Investigation Division will discuss identity theft and fraud. Attendees will receive tips on protecting themselves and learn what actions to take should their identity be stolen.

Hollywood Tough Guy: Gianni Russo’s Life in “The Godfather” and Beyond

• Date: Tuesday, April 16
• Time: 7 – 8 p.m.
• Location: Historic courtroom on the second floor.
• Cost: Free for Members or with Museum admission.
• Description: Growing up in New York’s Little Italy, Russo’s experience with the Mob began as an adolescent, delivering envelopes for Mafia boss Frank Costello. He went on to be a successful actor, most notably playing Vito Corleone’s ill-fated son-in-law Carlo Rizzi in “The Godfather.” During this special conversation, Russo will discuss his work on the set of “The Godfather,” working
  for Costello, fighting with actor James Caan and more.

The Underground One-Year Anniversary

• Date: Saturday, April 20
• Time: 8 p.m. – midnight
• Location: The Underground, located in the basement of the Museum.
• Cost: Free at the speakeasy side entrance with the password “Put on the Ritz.”
• Description: Since opening one year ago, the Museum’s immersive Prohibition
  history exhibition has welcomed thousands of guests, poured countless cocktails and distilled hundreds of gallons of award-winning moonshine. At this special celebration sponsored by Jim Beam, enjoy extraordinary food and drink specials and live jazz by Amanda King and Her Prohibition Three. Must be 21 and older to attend.

Boulevard of Dreams: The Early History of the Las Vegas Strip

• Date: Saturday, April 27
• Time: 2 – 3 p.m. with book signing to follow
• Location: Oscar B. Goodman Room on the third floor.
• Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum Admission.
• Description: Historian Lynn Zook will offer insights into the legendary—and notorious—visionaries who built the first 11 hotels on the Las Vegas Strip, as well as discuss the distinctive stories behind each of these historic establishments.
