 THE MOB MUSEUM AND THE UNDERGROUND SPEAKEASY ANNOUNCE MARCH PROGRAMS, PROMOTIONS

LAS VEGAS (February 2021) – The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its roster of public programs for March, as well as monthly specials inside The Underground speakeasy.

Community Safety Forum: Community-Oriented Policing
Date: Sunday, March 7
Time: 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Description: As police departments across the country strive to mend community-police relations, North Las Vegas’ C.O.P. (Community-Oriented Policing) officers are working to build trust with residents and businesses. Officer Caitlyn Eber will explain what she and her fellow officers are doing to open lines of communication with underserved neighborhoods. A livestream of the presentation will be posted on the Museum’s website thanks to NV Energy’s generous support.

The Whiskey Club: Irish Whiskey from the Jameson Distillery
Date: Wednesday, March 10
Time: 8 p.m.
Location: The Underground speakeasy and distillery, located in the basement of The Mob Museum.

Description: In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Pernod-Ricard brand ambassador and award-winning bartender Raul Faria will discuss Ireland’s centuries-old distilling traditions. Guests are invited to enjoy a selection of exceptionally well-balanced Irish whiskeys from the Jameson Distillery and delectable small bites inspired by Irish cuisine.

‘Wide Open’: 90 Years of Legal Gambling in Nevada
Part One: Becoming America’s Playground, 1931-1960

Description: To recognize the Nevada gambling industry’s 90^th anniversary this March, the Museum will host a two-part speaker series featuring experts on the turbulent, Mob-centered history of the state’s casino industry. For “Part One: Becoming America’s Playground, 1931-1960,” Michael Green and Geoff Schumacher will chart the gambling industry’s rise from legalization in 1931 through its Mob-controlled golden age of the 1950s. For “Part Two: Becoming a Global Destination, 1961-2021,” David G. Schwartz and Alan Feldman will trace gaming’s evolution from the themed resorts of the 1960s through the megaresort era starting in the 1990s.
Speakers:

• Michael Green is an associate professor of history at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He is the author of numerous books on the history of Nevada and Las Vegas, including “Nevada: A History of the Silver State” and “Las Vegas: A Centennial History.” He is also a member of The Mob Museum’s board of directors.
• Geoff Schumacher is the vice president of exhibits and programs for The Mob Museum. He is the author of “Howard Hughes: Power, Paranoia, and Palace Intrigue” and “Sun, Sin & Suburbia: The History of Modern Las Vegas.”
• David G. Schwartz, professor and the associate vice provost for Faculty Affairs at UNLV. He studies gambling and casinos, video games, Las Vegas, tourism and higher education. Schwartz has authored several books, including “Grandissimo: The First Emperor of Las Vegas” and At the Sands: The Casino That Shaped Classic Las Vegas, Brought the Rat Pack Together, and Went Out with a Bang.”
• Alan Feldman is one of the world’s leading experts on responsible gaming. As Distinguished Fellow in Responsible Gaming for UNLV’s International Gaming Institute, Feldman develops programs and policies to advance related knowledge and capabilities within the industry and regulatory community. Feldman spent nearly 30 years in the gaming industry with MGM Resorts.

Oh Canada: On the Front Lines of the Fight Against Organized Crime

Description: In recent decades, the Great White North has been a hotbed of organized crime activity, especially in large cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Hamilton, Ontario. Retired police intelligence sergeant and criminology professor at Mohawk College, Stephen Metelsky, will discuss recent Mob history in Canada, including Project OTremens, a case that exposed a United States and Canada drug trafficking operation involving two New York Mafia families.
Speaker:

• Stephen Metelsky, M.A., is a writer, organized crime specialist, retired police intelligence sergeant and criminology professor at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario.

Breaking Down Barriers: Women in Law Enforcement

Description: In recent decades, women have become a larger part of American law enforcement. In honor of Women’s History Month, a panel featuring accomplished local women in law enforcement will discuss the challenges women face in policing and what needs to be done to overcome it. Attendees will hear from accomplished leaders who have paved the way for innovative policing and better relations between police and the community.
Speakers:

• Chief Pamela Ojeda, North Las Vegas Police Department.
• Cynthia Santana is the assistant special agent in charge for the FBI. Santana entered on duty as a Special Agent for the FBI in January 2001 and has worked for a variety of cities in the United States.
• Captain Sasha Larkin has been with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for two years. Larkin currently leads the Office of Internal Oversight and Constitutional Policing, which comprises the Force Investigation Team, the Critical Incident Review Team and the Internal Oversight unit.

Minds in Crisis: Mental Health in American Prisons
Date: Wednesday, March 31

Description: The U.S. prison population has more than quadrupled over the past four decades, and many of those behind bars are mentally ill. A shortage of mental health treatment options has pushed many people in need of psychiatric care into the pipeline to prison instead. The director of the Nevada Department of Corrections, Charles Daniels, and Dr. Christine Montross, author of “Waiting for an Echo: The Madness of American Incarceration,” will examine this critical problem and discuss solutions.

• Christine Montross, author of “Waiting for an Echo: The Madness of American Incarceration,” and associate professor of psychiatry and human behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
• Charles Daniels, 30-year corrections veteran and director, Nevada Department of Corrections.

Vintage Slot Machines on Permanent Display
Date: March 1
Time: The Mob Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Location: Open City exhibition located on the second floor.
Description: In the 1950s and ’60s, many Las Vegas and Reno casinos embraced “figural” slot machines – machines that look like human figures. There were cowboys, Native Americans, cocktail waitresses, miners, gangsters and more. Two vintage figural slot machines are now on permanent display inside the vault in the Skim Room on the second floor of the Museum.

The cowboy machine was featured in the Pioneer Club on Fremont Street. The quarter slot resembles the 40-foot-tall Vegas Vic sign, which debuted above the Pioneer Club in 1951 and still towers over Fremont Street today. Also, on display is a bandit machine requiring gamblers to pull his gun-toting arm to spin the reels.
