LAS VEGAS (July 2024) – The Atomic Museum announces an upcoming free workshop for local educators in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino. Titled “Nuestras Voces: Bringing the Smithsonian to Your Classroom,” the event will explore the use of primary resources, museum objects and children’s books in the classroom.

Attendees will learn about complimentary educational resources provided by the Atomic Museum along with an array of children’s books published by the National Museum of the American Latino. Guests will also engage in sample history, culture and science activities designed for teacher participation, which can be easily replicated in the classroom as stand-alone activities. Additionally, there will be an orientation on using the Smithsonian Learning Lab, a free digital learning platform, followed by a Q&A session.

Each attendee will also receive a resource kit, including copies of all the featured books and reproducible handouts for classroom use. The featured books include “Nuestra América: 30 Inspiring Latinas and Latinos Who Have Shaped the United States,” “Nuestras Voces: Paloma’s Song for Puerto Rico,” “Nuestras Voces: On the Homefront with Valentina,” “Nuestras Voces: Cocuyo Lights the Way” and “Nuestras Voces: Wishing on a Star With Estrella.”

The workshop is free and open to teachers of all grade levels and subject areas, though it may be particularly beneficial for upper elementary and middle school teachers, librarians and other educators specializing in social studies, English and language arts, ESL/ESOL, Spanish language, arts education and science.

The workshop will be offered on two separate occasions: Thursday, July 11 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and Friday, July 12 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Atomic Museum. Food and refreshments will also be provided. To register for this free event or for more information, click here.
