THE MOB MUSEUM ANNOUNCES JULY PROGRAMS

LAS VEGAS (June 2022) – The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its roster of public programs for July.

The Numbers Racket: One Woman’s Story of the Illegal Street Lottery in Detroit
Date: Thursday, July 14
Time: 7 to 8 p.m.

Description: Novelist and Professor Bridgett Davis shares the triumphant story of her mother, who ran an illegal street lottery in Detroit for more than 30 years. Fannie Davis’ numbers business provided a comfortable life for her children, who grew up in a loving home, attended the best schools and wore the best clothes. But Fannie’s success required determination, ingenuity and courage in a risk-laden environment, all while fending off rivals and avoiding law enforcement’s watchful eye. A book signing with Davis will take place in the courtroom immediately following the program.
Speaker:  Bridgett M. Davis is a novelist, essayist, teacher, filmmaker, memoirist, curator and daughter of Motor City racketeer Fannie Davis. 

Mafia Hitmen: New York’s Notorious East Harlem Purple Gang
Date: Wednesday, July 20
Time: 7 to 8 p.m.

Description: A string of grisly murders terrorized New York City in the 1970s. A rogue sect of Mob hitmen known as the East Harlem Purple Gang emerged as a violent force closely linked to the New York Mafia’s Five Families. As law enforcement struggled to track down the killers, the Purple Gang’s vicious tactics became a media obsession. Veteran Mob historian Scott Deitche will provide stories and insights about the East Harlem Purple Gang and reflect on those who remain at large today. A book signing with Deitche will take place in the courtroom immediately following the program.
Speaker: Scott Deitche is an author specializing in organized crime and the Mafia. He has written eight books and more than 50 articles and has appeared on national television networks such as History, A&E and Discovery.

The Rise of ‘Big Dope’: Organized Crime and America’s Raging Opioid Crisis
Date: Tuesday, July 26
Time: 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Description: The deadliest drug crisis in U.S. history started with people overdosing on prescription opioids, an epidemic fueled by profit-driven drug manufacturers and doctors. Today, the epidemic is largely a result of illegal synthetic drugs – meth, heroin and especially fentanyl, created in China and distributed by Mexican cartels. Journalist Sam Quinones, the nation’s foremost chronicler of this heartbreaking crisis, will explain what is happening and offer ideas to address the onslaught of addiction that devastates American communities. A book signing with Quinones will take place in the courtroom immediately following the program. 

Speaker: Sam Quinones is a journalist, storyteller, former Los Angeles Times reporter and author of several acclaimed books chronicling the opioid crisis in America.
