THE MOB MUSEUM ANNOUNCES SEPTEMBER PROGRAMS

LAS VEGAS (August 2019) – The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its roster of public programs for September.

Science of Crime: Drug Chemistry

• Date: Saturday, Sept. 14
• Time: 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
• Location: Organized Crime Today Exhibit on the first floor at The Mob Museum.
• Cost: Free for Museum Members with Museum Admission.
• Description: A forensic scientist from the Chemistry Detail of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Forensic Laboratory will discuss the basic concept of what a “drug” is, the different drug classes and how unknown samples are recovered and tested in the laboratory to determine their composition. The presentation will cover the analysis of trace materials and include arson analysis, physical matches and complete unknowns.

Community Safety Forum: Emergency Preparedness

• Date: Sunday, Sept. 15
• Time: 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
• Location: In the Historic Courtroom on the second floor.
• Cost: Free, including free Museum admission, thanks to sponsorship provided by NV Energy. The Mob Museum will provide live streaming of the presentations online.
• Description: Southern Nevada Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will lead a program on emergency preparedness where attendees will learn the basic tenets of food, water, medical plans and evacuation preparation when disaster strikes.

Garden State Gangland: A Book Signing with Scott Deitche

• Date: Saturday, Sept. 19
• Time: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
• Location: In the Museum Retail Store.
• Cost: Free
• Description: New Jersey’s organized crime history has been one of the most colorful in the country. Scott M. Deitche, author of “Garden State Gangland: The Rise of the Mob in New Jersey,” which details the New Jersey Mob from the Prohibition era through the peak of the Mob’s power, will sign copies of his book.

The Summit: The Mob in Las Vegas

• Date: Saturday, Sept. 21
• Time: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
• Location: In the Oscar B. Goodman Room on the third floor.
• Cost: Regular price is $225; member price is $180.
• Description: Hosted by keynote speaker Oscar Goodman, this one-day conference centers on the Mob’s four-decade-long reign in Las Vegas. Guests will engage in conversations with historians, journalists, agents, regulators and others on the Mob’s arrival in Las Vegas, its control of the Strip and its eventual eradication from the casino industry. Discussions will dig deep into subject matter involving mobsters such as Meyer Lansky, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal and Tony Spilotro. Breakfast, lunch, a tour of The Mob Museum’s distillery and a gift bag are all included.

Becoming America’s Playground: Las Vegas in the 1950s

• Date: Sunday, Sept. 22
• Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
• Location: In the Oscar B. Goodman Room on the third floor followed by a book signing in the retail store.
• Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum Admission.
• Description: Las Vegas hosted 1 million tourists in 1950. It hosted 10 million in 1960. During the 1950s, Las Vegas grew into the leading destination for postwar America to enjoy vices illegal or frowned upon back home. Historian Larry Gragg will discuss his latest book, “Becoming America’s Playground: Las Vegas in the 1950s,” which explains how this pivotal decade transformed Las Vegas forever.

The IRS and Organized Crime: 100 Years of Following the Money

• Date: Monday, September 23
• Time: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Location: In the Historic courtroom on the second floor.
• Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum Admission
• Speakers:
  • John D. Fort, chief of the IRS Criminal Investigation Unit
  • Kristina O’Connell, special agent
  • Tigran Gambaryan, special agent
  • James Daniels, special agent
  • Steven Berryman, retired special agent
• Description: This detailed panel discussion includes insights and case reviews by John D. Fort, the chief of the IRS criminal investigation unit. Fort was appointed the position in June 2017 and is responsible for a worldwide team of special agents who investigate criminal violations of the tax code, money laundering, police corruption, cyber, identity theft, narcotics and terrorist-financing around the globe. The discussion covers the Treasury Departments initial case 100 years ago where Elmer Irey created a special unit to crack down on tax evaders. Irey’s “T-Men” became a leading force against corrupt politicians and crime bosses. Its signature case put Chicago Mob boss Al Capone behind bars in 1931. The Intelligence Unit evolved into the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, which today follows the money to build cases against tax cheats and money launderers. With 3,100 employees worldwide, IRS CI fills a unique niche in federal law enforcement, exposing sophisticated schemes to defraud the government.
